“Witsec”

Most of us would not immediately recognize the acronym above for its full meaning, Witness Security Program, which is also known as, U. S. Federal Witness Protection Program.  It is operated by the U. S. Marshals Service to protect witnesses before, during and after a trial from hostile defendants.  Some are provided a new identity and may even live out the rest of their lives under government protection. Several benefits are available including: a new location, a new Social Security number, a new driver’s license, a new school with new records, a new house, a salary and even facelifts, dental work and psychological counseling.  On TV crime shows they are often portrayed as innocent victims, however, the vast majority are career criminals looking to be absolved of charges for their own activities.  One can leave the program but do so at great risk of death from Organized Crime.

There seems to be many parallels here to our Christian walk.  Perhaps we could coin an acronym called CWPP or Christian Witness Protection Program. When we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and are immersed into Him, we also start a new life with a new identity (Rom 6:3-6). Our new creation should look as different as the government kind (2 Cor 5:17) (Eph 4:24) (Col 3: 10). Our transformation however, is not an external, physical one, rather an internal, spiritual one (Col 3:5-10) (Col 1:10) (2 Th 1:3). We also need to be constantly aware that our enemy, the devil, is still seeking to lure us back to our old life and, like a roaring lion wants to devour us (1 Pe 5:8). The Federal witnesses live in constant fear of exposure and death, whereas the Christian does not need to “…be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…” (Mt 10:28) Nevertheless, we too were not innocent victims, rather rebellious sinners (Rom 3:23) who were “…justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Rom 3: 24) Sometimes those in the WITSEC think they can sneak back to their old life for just a brief time, only to be killed by their enemies.  So it is with a member of the CWPP, Satan will always try to lure us back by our own evil desires (Jas 1:14) into the danger of friendship with the world (Jas 4:4). RESIST!
